Two Supreme Court judges have recused themselves from hearing petitions filed against former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda. The petitions are connected to allegations of abduction and disappearance involving 11 youths in Colombo and its suburbs in 2008.
Justices Dilip Nawaz and Priyantha Fernando announced their decision to recuse themselves from the proceedings, citing personal reasons. The announcement was made during a hearing before a three-judge bench on Friday, the 28th of March 2025.
The petitions, filed by the relatives of the alleged victims, challenge the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw charges previously brought against Karannagoda, who served as the Navy Commander at the time of the incidents.
As a result of the recusal, the case will now be heard before a different bench, with the hearing scheduled for September 15, 2025.
