Former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles has been summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement regarding the death of a police sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division. The sergeant died in a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara, in 2023.
A senior CID official confirmed that the former minister has been called in for questioning tomorrow, citing suspicions that he may possess information relevant to the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon is currently in remand custody in connection with the same case.
The incident occurred on December 31, 2023, when a police sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division was fatally shot near a hotel in Weligama. In recent developments, the Matara Magistrate’s Court ordered the arrest of eight police officers, including the then Acting Inspector General of Police, Deshabandu Tennakoon, in connection with the incident.
