
The complainant doctor was able to easily identify the former army soldier suspected of seriously sexually assaulting her at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital during the identification parade.
The suspect was identified during the parade held before Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya on Friday (March 28).
The doctor who filed the complaint had arrived at the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate’s Court with a team of lawyers, including President’s Counsel Kalinga Indratissa, to appear at the identification parade.
After the identification parade was held at the Magistrate’s office, the case was called up again in open court.
At that time, the Children and Women’s Bureau of the Anuradhapura Police Headquarters, submitted a further report regarding this incident and requested that the suspect be remanded as further investigations were being conducted.
Whilst accepting the request made by the police, the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya ordered that the suspect be further remanded until April 10th.
At that time, the suspect, addressing the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate, stated that he wanted to provide a confidential statement regarding this incident and requested permission to do so.
Responding to the suspect’s request, the Chief Magistrate said that the suspect’s request could be considered only after a medical report was obtained from a phychiatrist regarding the suspect’s mental well being.
Accordingly, the Chief Magistrate further ordered the Anuradhapura Headquarters Police to produce the suspect before a psychiatrist at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and to submit the relevant medical report to the court.
A former army soldier and a former female officer residing in the Galnewa area were remanded.
The suspect, who is remanded in custody on charges of raping the female doctor was also found to have had a live bomb stashed away in a bowl at his house by the police. The live bomb was detonated and destroyed by the Police Special Task Force on court orders.
No lawyer appeared for the suspect today either.
