
Colombo, March 31 — The Government of Sri Lanka has turned its attention to supporting humanitarian efforts in Myanmar, as part of a regional commitment to disaster relief and emergency response.
A preliminary coordination meeting was held today at the Disaster Management Center (DMC) auditorium under the leadership of the DMC Director General. The session focused on organizing humanitarian assistance and the deployment of specialized search and rescue teams to aid those affected in Myanmar.
The high-level discussion brought together key stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police. Also in attendance were representatives from various government institutions, United Nations agencies, and both local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
During the meeting, participants unanimously agreed on the urgency of establishing a dedicated coordination mechanism. This structure will ensure swift delivery of humanitarian aid and facilitate the rapid deployment of emergency response teams, tailored to the specific needs of affected communities in Myanmar.
The initiative reflects Sri Lanka’s ongoing commitment to regional solidarity and disaster response readiness in times of crisis.
