Jaffna, March 31 — The government is taking steps to boost domestic air travel in Sri Lanka, with a focus on expanding operations and upgrading infrastructure at Palali International Airport.
Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, conducted an official inspection of Palali International Airport today, accompanied by Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, several Members of Parliament, Secretary of Defense Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuiyakontha, and senior officials from the Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd.
During his visit, Minister Ratnayake met with staff from all departments at the airport to evaluate current facilities and identify areas for development. He assured that the government would provide the necessary support and guidance to improve operations at the airport.
Addressing the media, the Minister emphasized the increasing demand from both local and foreign travelers, especially from the Northern Province, for improved domestic air connectivity. He noted that many tourists from Jaffna currently use Katunayake Airport and that strengthening Palali’s capabilities would serve as a significant alternative.
“We are considering amending Sri Lanka’s aviation laws to better accommodate domestic air travel. The development of Palali Airport will play a crucial role in reviving the economy of the war-affected Northern region,” he stated.
According to airport authorities, Palali Airport already has the internal funding capacity for the upcoming development work. Key infrastructure enhancements will include extending the runway and constructing a modern passenger terminal to ensure safety and convenience.
Minister Ratnayake stressed the importance of a new business strategy and a feasibility study to ensure the success of the project. He confirmed that development efforts are expected to begin soon.
