(COLOMBO) – The police in the Indian State of Chennai rescued a Sri Lankan businessman barely hours after he was grabbed in a ransom kidnapping, local reports said on Friday.
According to the reports the businessman identified as Mohammed Shyam (50) had arrived in India earlier this week and had been staying at Parry’s Corner in Mannady in the northern part of Chennai.
The suspects had grabbed the man from the street and bundled him into a car before speeding away.
The businessman’s daughter had alerted the local police after she received a call from the kidnappers demanding a ransom payment of Indian INR 1.5 million in exchange for his safe release, the reports said.
The suspects were tracked down by police that used high-tech communication to trace the suspects at a location close to a beach head.
Initial investigations have learnt that the woman was believed to be the king pin behind the incident after falling out with the businessman over a financial issue, the reports quoted the Chennai Police as saying.
Four persons including the woman are currently in police custody.
