The government wants to further reduce fuel prices, but it’s not currently possible due to conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), says Minister of Science and Technology Krishantha Abeysena.
He made these remarks while speaking to the media after attending an event.
“We also want to lower fuel prices, but we can’t do it right now. We’re still under IMF conditions. We need to consider our income and expenditure. The government needs revenue, and it’s not easy to reduce prices all at once,” the Minister explained.
He emphasized the importance of shifting toward renewable energy.
“That’s why, when the Indian Prime Minister visits, he focuses on the renewable energy aspect of our agreements. That’s how we can reduce electricity bills. The same goes for fuel—we have to adjust gradually. The IMF understands that, but we can’t make drastic changes overnight.”
He added, “Since this government came into power, we’ve already reduced fuel prices significantly. Just recently, we brought it down by Rs. 10, and there have been several other reductions before that.”
