Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Ramanna Nikaya has officially expelled Venerable Rajangana Saddharathana Thero from the Sangha following allegations of misconduct, including the use of a YouTube channel to make inappropriate and obscene remarks.
The expulsion was communicated in writing to the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, and other relevant institutions. The announcement was also formally conveyed to the Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
According to sources within the Nikaya, Venerable Rajangana was summoned before the Disciplinary Committee, where he faced a hearing before four senior Nayaka Theros. After reviewing the evidence and testimonies, the committee found him guilty of conduct unbecoming of a member of the monastic order.
The allegations center around the use of digital media—particularly a YouTube channel operated under his name—where he is accused of publishing content deemed incompatible with the values and discipline of the Buddhist clergy.
This marks a rare instance of public disciplinary action within the Sangha and signals a strong stance by the Ramanna Nikaya in upholding monastic discipline and preserving the integrity of the order.
The expulsion is expected to raise broader conversations about the conduct of clergy on digital platforms and the responsibilities that come with the public reach of online influence.
