- Shammi Silva and clan stripped in Parliament
Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe revealed that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva had in a letter dated November 6, 2023 to the International Cricket Council called for the country to be banned citing government interference.
Minister Ranasinghe made the disclosure on Sunday morning a day after Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament that Silva had fooled and misled the ICC by providing concocted facts and figures without proof to the sport’s global keeper.
“They (SLC) got the ban imposed on Sri Lanka hiding behind the notion of democracy and Independance, so they can continue with their corrupt activities”, said Premadasa.
He said that Parliament asking for the amounts that were paid to all those contracted by SLC, cricket great Muttiah Muralidaran stepping in to be part of a committee to draft a flawless Constitution for SLC in order to prevent vote buying by elected officials, the government objecting to betting companies sponsoring the domestic Lanka Premier League with foreign players and the audit report that documented widespread financial misuse, corruption and nepotism that was leaked out to media were conveyed to the ICC by SLC as government interference to call for the ban.
