Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe who is fast gaining ground in the battle against corruption at Sri Lanka Cricket has called for the arrest of the sport’s scandal scarred head Shammi Silva.
He made the call for Silva’s arrest in Parliament as he requested the Attorney General to act now.
Silva has already been branded a traitor for calling on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ban Sri Lanka citing political interference.
“Shammi Silva has violated the Constitution of Sri Lanka by calling on the ICC to ban the country in a high handed act of treachery and should be taken to task and I appeal to the Attorney General”, Minister Ranasinghe told Parliament this morning.
He also tabled in Parliament the letters written by Silva that called on the ICC to ban Sri Lanka and to shift the Under 19 World Cup to be held in January 2024 to another country.
As expected SLC put out a media statement claiming the letters were fake documents.
Meanwhile Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament that Silva was up to a dubious double-acting game to get the ICC to lift the ban so he can save face and project himself as a hero who restored Sri Lanka’s status on the International scene.
“It has now become clear that Shammi Silva will meet the ICC and get the ban lifted and arrive at the airport to be garlanded as the saviour of Sri Lanka,” said Premadasa.
