Colombo, April 4 — Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has called for urgent bipartisan unity and the re-submission of budget proposals in light of the United States’ decision to impose a 44% tariff on Sri Lankan exports.
The newly imposed tariff is expected to severely impact critical sectors of the Sri Lankan economy, particularly the garment industry, which is a key contributor to export revenue and employment.
“This move could result in significant job losses and jeopardize our export targets,” Rajapaksa warned, noting that Sri Lanka is still grappling with the aftereffects of the 2022 economic crisis.
Highlighting the importance of proactive measures, Rajapaksa urged the government to explore alternative strategies to safeguard export income, should diplomatic negotiations with the United States fail.
He called on all political parties to set aside their differences and work collectively to support the industries most affected by the tariff.
“As we face this enormous obstacle, it is time for all political parties to work together and support the affected sectors,” Rajapaksa said, emphasizing the need for national unity to navigate the growing economic challenge.
