A police complaint has been reported in the media alleging that a young woman, who sought treatment at the outpatient department of the Negombo District General Hospital, was sexually assaulted by the attending doctor.
In response to the incident, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) released a statement clarifying that the doctor in question is not currently a member of the association. According to the GMOA, he was expelled from the association several years ago due to disciplinary violations.
The full statement issued by the GMOA reads:
“A police complaint has been reported in the media alleging that a young woman who visited the outpatient department of the Negombo District General Hospital for treatment was sexually assaulted by the doctor who examined her.
Based on information received from our Negombo District General Hospital branch, it has been confirmed that the doctor involved in the incident was expelled from the membership of the Government Medical Officers’ Association several years ago. The expulsion was due to violations of the GMOA constitution and continued undisciplined behavior.
Nevertheless, we strongly believe that an impartial investigation must be carried out regarding this serious incident that took place in a government hospital. The law must be enforced promptly, and stringent action should be taken against any perpetrators. The GMOA stands ready to provide its fullest cooperation to such investigations.
We firmly believe that the safety of women must be ensured not only within the healthcare system but throughout society. The Government Medical Officers’ Association reiterates its commitment to providing leadership in developing robust policies and future programs aimed at addressing this critical issue.”
