A welcome banner displayed in Colombo for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit drew quick attention on social media for grammatical errors and the omission of Tamil, one of Sri Lanka’s official languages.
In response to the criticism, event organizers swiftly corrected the mistakes, replacing the banner with an updated version that included proper grammar and the Tamil language.
Lawyer N.K. Ashokbharan took to social media to commend the prompt correction, stating that addressing the mistake rather than justifying or ignoring it was a “relatively better approach.” He also praised the JVP-led administration for taking responsibility and ensuring inclusivity in the revised message.
The correction comes amid heightened visibility during Prime Minister Modi’s official state visit, reinforcing the importance of cultural and linguistic sensitivity in diplomatic protocols.
