Two individuals, including a woman, have been admitted to the Ampara General Hospital following an assault allegedly carried out by associates of a deputy minister, police sources confirmed. The incident occurred in Udagirigama village, located in the Uhana 24 area of Ampara, and is said to have stemmed from a dispute over land ownership.
According to police, the victims were attacked by a group that included a relative of a deputy minister. One of the injured, a woman, told authorities that the assault was orchestrated by relatives of the deputy minister, and she specifically accused them of attempting to forcibly take over a piece of paddy land she owns.
The woman claimed that the father of the deputy minister’s wife had tried to seize the land, leading her to lodge a formal complaint with the Uhana Police Station. However, she further alleged that the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) at the station failed to intervene or resolve the situation fairly, despite her repeated appeals for justice.
The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, raising concerns about political interference in legal matters and the misuse of power by those close to influential figures. It remains unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the assault.
Police say investigations are underway, but residents and family members of the victims are calling for impartial action and a transparent inquiry into the incident.
