Sarvajana Balaya Leader and Member of Parliament Dilith Jayaweera has called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to immediately convene an all-party conference to address the mounting challenges facing Sri Lanka, particularly in the wake of the United States’ newly imposed tariff policy.
Speaking at a public meeting in Ampara, Jayaweera stressed the urgency of the situation and pointed to India’s rapid development as an example Sri Lanka could follow.
“If there is a lesson we can learn from Prime Minister Modi following his recent diplomatic visit, it is how India — a nation that suffered for 70 years — is now rising swiftly through the power of entrepreneurship. Today, India’s middle class alone exceeds 300 million people — that’s more than the entire population of the United States,” he said.
Referring to the geopolitical and economic pressures facing Sri Lanka, Jayaweera added, “On one side we’re facing the Trump tariff. On the other, we’re becoming geographically vulnerable. We need to act now. I respectfully ask the President to convene an all-party conference without delay. Give us the opportunity to come together as leaders who love this country and offer solutions.”
He emphasized that political rivalries should be set aside in favor of collaboration for the sake of the nation’s future.
“This is not about politics. It’s about survival. Give us something meaningful — something constructive. If this government requests help, we are ready to give it. We want a country left where politics can still exist. Let us work together.”
