Firebrand politician and lawyer Udaya Gammanpila fears an innocent man could be named as the mastermind of the Easter Sunday carnage as the clock ticks by to observe the sixth anniversary of the April 21 bombing that killed over 250 church goers.
Gammanpila made the declaration in a television talk show following an assurance given by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake that the mastermind would be revealed before April 21 after Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith threatened to pour onto the streets with his flock if justice is not done to the survivours and families of the victims.
“Sometime ago when the police were under pressure to arrest the suspect in the rape and murder of a young girl, a man branded as Kondaya was taken into custody and assaulted to the point that he admits he committed the crime.
“But in court it transpired that Kondaya’s DNA did not match the sample found on the victim. When questioned Kondaya told court he was assaulted by four intoxicated cops to admit he committed the rape and murder of the girl.
” This same episode could happen and an innocent person would be named as the Easter Sunday bombing mastermind now that the President has assured the Cardinal and put the police under pressure to act”, Gammanpila declared with less than two weeks before the April 21 deadline.
President Dissanayake received a large percentage of the Catholic vote over election promises he made to mete out justice to the victims and name the mastermind.
