National People’s Power (NPP) MP Nimal Palihena clarified in Parliament today that the current government is not responsible for introducing the tax on eggs, insisting that it was not a new levy imposed by their administration.
Responding to public criticism and growing discontent, Palihena acknowledged that many have grown accustomed to protesting government policy, but emphasized that taxation is essential to running a functioning state.
“A country cannot be maintained without tax revenue,” he stated. “VAT plays a key role in this process. A significant portion of our total revenue comes from indirect taxes, particularly VAT.”
He also pointed out that a growing number of people are operating businesses online, some of which have not been paying VAT under current structures. He said the government’s aim is to amend the law to ensure fair competition and close loopholes that allow certain sectors to avoid tax obligations.
“These reforms are not about punishing the people—they’re about creating a level playing field,” Palihena added. “Let’s be clear: Our country didn’t become poor because we governed it.”
