Mumbai’s bustling Churchgate station, the largest used local railway station in the city, now proudly displays a tribute to some of India’s most celebrated sports personalities. Among the honored individuals are two cricketing stalwarts—Nari Contractor and Diana Edulji—and the renowned coach, Dinesh Lad, each with illustrious contributions to Indian sports.
Cricketers in the Spotlight
Nari Contractor and Diana Edulji, both recipients of the prestigious Padma Shri award (in 1962 and 2002, respectively), are commemorated for their achievements in the cricketing world. Contractor, a former Indian cricket captain, remains an icon for his courage and contributions to Indian cricket during challenging times. Diana Edulji, a trailblazer in women’s cricket, has not only excelled on the field but has also advocated tirelessly for the growth of the sport in India.
Dinesh Lad: The Coach Who Shaped Champions
Joining these cricketing legends is Dinesh Lad, a Dronacharya Awardee in 2022 and a beloved figure in Indian cricket coaching. Lad is renowned for shaping the careers of international stars like Rohit Sharma and Shardul Thakur. His rise from humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s most respected cricket coaches is a story of hard work and dedication.
Speaking exclusively about this recognition, Lad shared his heartfelt journey, Lad said, “I joined Railways in 1982 as a class four employee and retired after 39 years. I am proud to be a Dronacharya Awardee and to be on a list at Churchgate (old building) station. Thanks to Almighty God and Western Railway, and all the officers under whom I worked.”
A Broader Sporting Legacy
The tribute at Churchgate station extends beyond cricket. It also recognizes national awardees from other sports, including hockey, billiards and snooker, and basketball. This diverse representation underscores the rich sporting heritage of India and highlights the dedication of individuals across disciplines.
Churchgate station’s initiative is a fitting salute to these legends, who have not only brought glory to the nation but also inspired generations. Their achievements remind us that success is built on grit, perseverance, and the unwavering support of institutions like Indian Railways.
