A Sri Lankan doctor practicing in Oman has been suspended by Omani medical authorities following multiple allegations of sexual assault on female patients. The doctor, who previously worked in Sri Lanka before relocating to Oman several years ago, is accused of assaulting young female patients during his tenure in the Gulf nation.
Reports indicate that the doctor allegedly used hospital computers to engage with women on social media platforms. In response to these serious allegations, the hospital has suspended him pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
This incident adds to a concerning pattern of Sri Lankan medical professionals facing allegations of sexual misconduct both domestically and internationally. For instance, in April 2025, a doctor at Negombo General Hospital in Sri Lanka was under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a female patient during a medical examination. The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) acknowledged the gravity of the situation and called for a comprehensive investigation. They also noted that the accused doctor had been expelled from the association in 2021 due to repeated disciplinary violations.
Similarly, in August 2023, Dr. Nishanka Sanjeewa Kirumbara Liyanage, a Sri Lankan doctor practicing in Australia, was banned from medical practice for at least 15 years after being found guilty of sexually assaulting six vulnerable patients under the guise of medical consultations. His crimes came to light after a pregnant woman reported inappropriate behavior, leading to further victims coming forward. Dr. Liyanage was subsequently jailed for four years and faced deportation to Sri Lanka upon release.
These incidents underscore the critical need for stringent oversight and accountability within the medical profession to protect patients and maintain public trust.
