The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that cricket will return to the Olympic stage at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, with six men’s and six women’s teams set to compete.
Although the qualification criteria have yet to be officially released, it is expected that the United States, as the host nation, will be granted direct entry into the competition. The remaining five teams in each category are likely to be determined through a global qualification process.
Each participating country will be allowed to field a squad of 15 players, within an overall athlete quota of 90 per gender. The format of the competition will follow the fast-paced and widely popular Twenty20 (T20) structure.
The Los Angeles Games are scheduled to begin on July 14, 2028, and will continue through July 30. This marks a historic moment for cricket, which has only appeared once before in Olympic history—at the 1900 Paris Games. On that occasion, Great Britain secured the gold medal while France earned silver.
The reintroduction of cricket to the Olympic roster is being hailed as a major milestone for the sport, offering a global stage and new opportunities for growth and exposure.
