Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was granted bail earlier today, now faces renewed legal pressure as a revision petition has been filed in the Court of Appeal seeking to cancel his bail.
Appearing on behalf of the prosecution at the Matara Magistrate’s Court, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris strongly objected to the bail decision, informing the court of the prosecution’s intention to file a revision application before the High Court. He emphasized that the investigations by the Criminal Investigation Department are still ongoing and currently at a crucial stage.
Peiris argued that releasing the suspect at such a sensitive point in the investigation could severely compromise the process. He expressed concern that Tennakoon’s re-entry into public life may pose a threat to the integrity of the investigation and requested a full report on the bail order to initiate urgent legal action.
Despite the prosecution’s objections, Matara Magistrate Aruna Indrajith Buddhadasa granted bail to Deshabandu Tennakoon on two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. The court clearly stated that the suspect must not interfere with witnesses, warning that any such interference could lead to the immediate cancellation of bail.
As part of the conditions imposed, the court also issued a travel ban on Tennakoon and ordered him to surrender his passport.
