In a shocking development, the Mihintale Police have arrested five suspects—including two serving police officers—in connection with a violent extortion case targeting a businessman in the Mihintale area.
The incident reportedly took place at a hotel where the suspects confronted a 44-year-old retired naval mechanic, forcibly taking him away in a vehicle. The group, which included two sergeants from the Polonnaruwa Police Station, allegedly posed as police officers while threatening to kill the businessman and other residents present at the location.
According to police sources, the suspects coerced the businessman’s wife into withdrawing funds from his bank account. They then made off with a sum of Rs. 4.5 million before fleeing the scene.
The incident has sparked outrage, particularly due to the involvement of law enforcement officers in what appears to be a premeditated and violent act of robbery.
Mihintale Police have launched a full-scale investigation, and further inquiries are currently underway to uncover additional details and determine whether others were involved.
