Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has marked the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with a heartfelt message of hope, unity, and resilience, reflecting on the journey Sri Lankans have taken to reclaim the spirit of celebration after years of hardship.
In her official New Year greeting, the Prime Minister acknowledged that in recent history, economic challenges had stripped many families of the ability to even imagine celebrating the New Year. However, she praised the courage and determination of the people, who rose above a broken system plagued by corruption and injustice to begin laying the foundation for a renewed nation.
“As we work together for ‘A Prosperous Country, a Beautiful Life,’ let us welcome this New Year with renewed hope and a fresh outlook,” the Prime Minister said. She emphasized that this moment marks more than a cultural milestone—it is a national turning point, one that reflects a growing sense of unity, purpose, and democratic engagement across all provinces.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya called the 2025 New Year celebrations a symbol of collective progress. She noted that for the first time in years, communities from the North to the South, East to the West, are moving forward together, energized by a shared commitment to reform and regeneration. “This year,” she said, “the aspirations of the people are already beginning to bear fruit, and we will see that spirit continue into the month of May and beyond.”
The Prime Minister urged citizens to honor the deeper meaning of the New Year by acting with compassion, respect, and peace within their communities. She encouraged every Sri Lankan to take on the responsibility of building a better country with confidence and resilience, through acts of cooperation and shared purpose.
In closing, she extended warm wishes to all Sri Lankans celebrating the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, expressing her hope for a future defined by strength, unity, and transformation.
