The Sri Lanka Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway into the use of police vehicles and officers at a public event attended by popular tuition teacher Hayeshika Fernando, also known as “Teacher Amma.”
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga stated that the inquiry aims to determine whether the fifth-grade scholarship tutoring teacher made unauthorized use of police escort services, including a police car, four motorcycles, and an additional vehicle.
According to Manatunga, the organizers of the event had informed police that nearly 8,000 students who sat for the Grade 5 scholarship examination would be attending, and had therefore made arrangements to secure security personnel and vehicles on a payment basis.
He clarified that police resources, including officers and vehicles, can be deployed for civilian events under special circumstances—provided it is done officially and the required fees are paid.
However, authorities have launched an investigation after preliminary observations suggested that the police presence may have been used for purposes other than those initially declared. SSP Manatunga emphasized that the outcome of the investigation will determine whether there was any misuse of official police resources.
The incident has sparked debate on social media, with some questioning whether public resources should be used to support private educational figures, even if paid for. Others argue that if procedures were followed, there is no legal or ethical breach.
As the inquiry continues, the Police Department has assured the public that it will maintain transparency and take appropriate action if any irregularities are found.
