The Department of Census and Statistics has released Sri Lanka’s National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) and the monthly consumer inflation data for March 2025.
According to the report, the country’s overall inflation—which stood at -3.9% in February 2025—has risen to -1.9% in March 2025, indicating a continued easing of deflationary trends.
A notable change was seen in food inflation. The headline inflation rate for the food category, which was recorded at -1.1% in February, increased to 0.8% in March. This marks the return of positive inflation in food prices, raising concerns about affordability and household expenses.
In the non-food category, headline inflation also showed an upward shift. It moved from -6.0% in February to -4.1% in March, although it remains in negative territory.
The data signals a gradual rise in consumer prices across key sectors, highlighting the need for close monitoring in the coming months.
