Social activist Dan Priyasad has been confirmed dead following a shooting incident that took place on the night of April 22 at the Laksanda Sevana apartment complex in Wellampitiya. The shooting occurred at approximately 9:10 PM on an upper floor of the residential complex, in what authorities have now identified as a targeted attack.
According to the initial statement by the police media spokesperson, two unidentified assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire using a pistol-type firearm before fleeing the scene. Priyasad was critically injured and was immediately admitted to hospital.
In a confusing turn of events, the police initially announced that Priyasad had succumbed to his injuries. However, hours later, officials walked back on the statement, clarifying that he was in fact alive but in critical condition and receiving intensive care.
The following morning, the Police Media Division officially confirmed that Dan Priyasad had passed away while receiving treatment. Hospital sources reported that he had sustained four gunshot wounds—two to the shoulder area and two to the chest.
A second individual was also injured in the incident but sustained only minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
At the time of reporting, no suspects have been apprehended, and investigations are ongoing. The Wellampitiya Police have launched a full inquiry into the motive and perpetrators behind the killing.
