Tensions flared in Kandy today as thousands of pilgrims surged toward the Sri Dalada Maligawa, overwhelming police forces and causing chaos along the main roads. The massive turnout for the sacred pilgrimage has led to serious difficulties in crowd control, with law enforcement struggling to manage the sheer volume of devotees.
One of the most affected areas was the main road in Ampitiya, where pilgrims fully blocked traffic in both directions. In the ensuing disorder, several vehicles — both in motion and parked — sustained damage, compounding the crisis for officials already stretched thin.
