Tensions flared in Kandy today as thousands of pilgrims surged toward the Sri Dalada Maligawa, overwhelming police forces and causing chaos along the main roads. The massive turnout for the sacred pilgrimage has led to serious difficulties in crowd control, with law enforcement struggling to manage the sheer volume of devotees.
One of the most affected areas was the main road in Ampitiya, where pilgrims fully blocked traffic in both directions. In the ensuing disorder, several vehicles — both in motion and parked — sustained damage, compounding the crisis for officials already stretched thin.
Due to the unmanageable crowds, police were forced to call in military assistance to support crowd control efforts. Public announcements have now been issued urging devotees not to join the already congested queues, citing both traffic complications and safety risks.
Authorities continue to appeal for public cooperation as they work to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of all attendees at this year’s Dalada pilgrimage.
