(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan authorities on Tuesday announced a visa free project for nationals of seven countries aimed at boosting the island-nation’s tourism sector.
In a statement the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration said the countries listed in the project are China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan.
The project has been launched with immediate effect, and will last until March 31, 2024, in line with Cabinet approval, it said.
However, those intending to use this privilege should, at first apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka.
Under this scheme tourists can enjoy a 30 days free visa period.
Free ETA under this scheme can be applied up to 31.03.2024, the statement said, adding that it cannot be extended further and is limited only to 30 days.
“In case the free ETA period of 30 days from the arrival date expires after May 2024, an extension of the visa could be made after paying the appropriate fees.
The visa fees and regulations for visitors from other countries however remain unchanged, the statement added.
The present visa fee for entry into Sri Lanka is around US$ 50 if obtained from the port of departure.
The fee for visas issued to foreign visitors on arrival to the country is US$ 60 at present.
