(COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament on Wednesday that cobras had taken up residence inside a rural school owing to the dilapidated condition of the building.
He said the reptiles had been discovered inside an ant hill inside a classroom at the Somadevi Vidyalaya in Serunuwara close to the central hill capital of Kandy some 149 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
He told Parliament that some 300 students in the school are at risk and called on the Education Minister to look into the matter at the very earliest.
Sri Lanka’s Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said estimates have been called from schools with dilapidated buildings and steps will be taken to renovate them within the next year.
