President Wavel Ramkalawan of Seychelles announced a state of emergency following a devastating blast at an explosives depot and subsequent heavy rains that wreaked havoc on the main island of Mahe.
The explosion, occurring early Thursday, inflicted extensive damage on an industrial zone, although claiming no lives but injuring 125.
The aftermath of the blast saw heavy rains hit the islands triggering floods, leading to the loss of 3 lives and severe damage to residential areas. Houses were submerged, roads were washed away, and landslides further compounded the destruction in certain regions.
President Ramkalawan swiftly declared a state of emergency, urging citizens to remain indoors and ordering the closure of schools for safety reasons. Providing updates to the media, he confirmed the loss of three lives due to flooding and disclosed that 125 individuals had suffered injuries and were receiving medical treatment.
Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the explosion, focusing on the handling of four containers of explosives by the responsible construction company.
Authorities are examining whether all necessary safety measures were adequately implemented to prevent such a catastrophic incident.
