Ireland clinched victory over Zimbabwe by 6 wickets in the final T20 of their three-match series, ultimately securing the series 2-1. Harry Tector and George Dockrell played pivotal roles, steering Ireland to a comfortable chase, following an early collapse in theri run chase.
Right from the start, Ireland showcased their prowess by limiting Zimbabwe to a below-par total of 140 for 6. Gareth Delaney wrapped up the first innings with exceptional figures of 2 for a mere 8 runs, emphasizing the precision of the Irish squad on the day. Joshua Little and Craig Young also contributed with two wickets each, dismantling the Zimbabwean batters.
The Irish then chased down the needed runs with 8 balls to spare, but not without their own struggles. The Irish faced an initial setback, stumbling at the hands of the Zimbabwean experienced bowling attack, losing a total of four wickets within the opening seven overs for 37 runs. The dismissals of Stirling, Balbirnie, Tucker, and Camper came as a surprise to the Irish camp. However, Harry Tector and George Dockrell rose to the challenge and showcased their mettle under the pump.
Tector delivered a magnificent unbeaten innings of 51, while Dockrell notched up 49, stitching a partnership of 104 steered Ireland to victory. The pair stuck at the crease for almost thirteen overs, fending off anything and everything the Zimbaweans threw at them. Ultimately, the Zimbabwe were left with a bitter taste reminiscent of the T20 World Cup Qualifiers held last month, missing out after winning the first game in their three match series.
Both teams will now face each other in a series of three more heated ODI’s over the course of the week. Zimbabwe will certainly look forward to getting some revenge on the visitors, while Ireland will hope to carry forward this momentum.
