Motorists complain of dangerously bumpy rides and deteriorating road quality on Sri Lanka’s once-pristine expressways. Authorities now confirm phased renovations will begin next month, starting with the Kottawa–Dodangoda stretch.
Expressways ‘Difficult to Drive’: When Will They Be Repaired?
Sri Lanka’s first expressway, the stretch from Kottawa to Gallewas opened on November 27, 2011. Fourteen years later, the expressway network, though expanded, remains largely untouched by full-scale repairs.
The Expressway Management and Projects Division of the Road Development Authority (RDA) confirms that no major renovation work has been carried out on these highways since their construction.
Drivers Speak Out: ‘Driving is Difficult’
An investigation reveals widespread dissatisfaction among drivers who regularly use the expressways. Many report a dangerously bumpy and uncomfortable driving experience.
“There are many places where the vehicle shakes. Especially at bridge joints, the road isn’t level. It damages the vehicle and causes discomfort to passengers,” said a private sector worker who travels the expressway frequently, particularly between Kottawa and Kaduwela.
Another regular user who drives from Kottawa to Galle said, “It feels like you’re dropping into potholes. The road standard has fallen drastically. Expressways were meant to be fast and smooth. Now, it’s an exhausting ride.”
A third driver pointed out that since tolls are being collected, the RDA has an obligation to ensure comfort and safety for travelers. “If we’re paying, we should get a decent road,” he said.
First-Time Full Renovation in the Works
The Expressway Management and Projects Division has confirmed that a complete renovation project is now in motion. This marks the first time since inception that such repairs will be carried out.
Preliminary steps have already been taken, and the renovation will be implemented in phases.
“The first phase will begin next month, covering the Kottawa to Dodangoda section. Subsequent phases will follow after that,” an RDA official explained.
Will Expressways Be Closed for Repairs?
Will travelers face closures during these extensive upgrades? According to the official, full closures are not planned.
“We’re considering partial closures, only the sections under renovation at any given time. The decision will depend on real-time traffic conditions,” the official added.
Future phases will be adjusted based on experience gained from the initial renovation stage.
Sri Lanka’s Expressway System: 14 Years and 300 Kilometers Later
Launched in 2011 with the Kottawa–Galle section, Sri Lanka’s expressway system has expanded significantly in the past 14 years. The network now spans over 300 kilometers and connects various regions.
Several segments of the Central Expressway are still under construction, and proposals for the Ruwanpura Expressway are also on the table.
Despite this growth, the lack of timely repairs has caused severe wear and tear—turning smooth rides into uncomfortable journeys. With repairs finally on the horizon, commuters hope that Sri Lanka’s expressways will soon return to their former glory.
