India and Sri Lanka may clash in a surprise limited-overs series in August 2025, following the postponement of India’s Bangladesh tour and the LPL. Cricket boards are in talks for a 3-ODI, 3-T20I series before Sri Lanka tours Zimbabwe.
Emergency India vs Sri Lanka Series Likely in August After Schedule Shake-Up
A surprise limited-overs cricket series between India and Sri Lanka could take place in mid-August, as both cricket boards scramble to fill a sudden gap in their respective schedules.
This opportunity arises after India’s planned tour of Bangladesh was unexpectedly postponed, freeing up their calendar. At the same time, the Lanka Premier League (LPL), originally scheduled for July to August, has also been postponed, creating a window for Sri Lanka to engage in a fresh bilateral contest.
Though no official announcement has been made yet, reliable sources suggest that discussions are well underway between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The boards are actively exploring the possibility of organizing a short series comprising three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
India was not originally scheduled to visit Sri Lanka in 2025, with their calendar focused on the now-postponed Bangladesh series. The unexpected break has opened the door for an impromptu engagement between the neighboring nations.
As per the existing tour commitments, Sri Lanka is set to travel to Zimbabwe in late August, with the series there beginning on August 29. This creates a narrow but viable window in mid-August, which both India and Sri Lanka could utilize for this potential series.
The last time the two cricketing nations clashed in a bilateral series on Sri Lankan soil was in July 2023. In that tour, India clinched the T20I series, while Sri Lanka stunned the visitors by winning the ODI series, adding further intrigue to the potential rematch.
While fans await formal confirmation, the stage is being set for a high-voltage emergency series that could provide exciting mid-season action and fill the void left by other postponed tournaments.
