(COLOMBO) – The driver of a private-owned passenger bus in Sri Lanka was arrested after he allegedly displayed obscene sexual hand signals to a female motorist, police said on Wednesday.
The alleged incident had allegedly taken place on the busy High Level Road close to the commercial capital of Colombo on Tuesday, they said.
The female motorist who was accompanying her young daughter at that time told police that the driver had repeatedly blocked her way and then displayed obscene explicit sexual signs with his hands when she horned for space.
The driver was arrested and subsequently released on bail on a court order.
Private passenger bus drivers come in for constant flak by the general public for their erratic behavior such as speeding, ignoring road signals, rude communication and above all obstructing other motorists and road users.
It has been conceded that a large number of the drivers are also known to be high on drugs such as heroin and ‘Ice’ and in some cases intoxicated with alcohol.
There have been stringent calls for tougher action for errant private bus drivers from stiff fines to even jail terms in order to make the roads a safer place to move on.
Private passenger buses make up nearly 80 percent of the island-nation’s public road transport service while the rest is operated by the State.
