(COLOMBO) – A drunken ambulance driver was arrested after he crashed on to a police road block in north-western Sri Lanka on Thursday after he had apparently lost control of the vehicle, police said on Friday.
According to police the ambulance registered with the State-run Colombo National Hospital was moving towards the Buddhist sacred city of Anuradhapura some 200 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
Apart from two support workers and the driver there were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the incident that took place near the Halawatha Deduru Oya Bridge in the Puttalam police area, they added.
The ambulance was listed to board a patient from the Anuradhapura Government Hospital and return to the CNH.
The driver along with his support staff and the ambulance was subsequently detained by police pending an inquiry.
