President Anura Kumara Dissanayake tells Parliament the new education reforms aim to reduce pressure on students and create a system focused on real-life learning, not robotic memorization.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressed Parliament today during the adjournment debate on the proposed new education reforms, emphasizing the government’s commitment to reshaping the country’s education system for the better.
He stated that under the new reforms, the government will take full responsibility for ensuring every child receives an optimal education suited to their growth and future.
The President explained that while the government will develop the core structure of the education reforms, educators themselves should have the autonomy to decide which subjects and approaches best suit the needs of students.
He stressed the importance of reducing the heavy burden that the current education system places on children. The President said the goal of these reforms is to nurture a generation of young people who are capable of living meaningful lives, rather than one molded into robotic repetition and memorization.
He added that the proposed system will broaden the learning spectrum, enabling students to go beyond traditional subjects like religion and history and explore a wider range of knowledge and skills relevant to modern society.
The President reiterated these views while speaking in Parliament during the ongoing debate on the proposed education reforms, making it clear that a transformation in the way Sri Lanka educates its children is a top priority for his administration.
