A devastating crash involving the official vehicle of Sri Lanka’s President’s Secretary injured a family of four, including two young children. The driver has been arrested and ordered to pay compensation as questions arise over official accountability.
The official vehicle of President’s Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake was involved in a serious road accident last night, injuring a family of four, including two young children.
The incident occurred around 9 pm near the Air Force Base on Akuregoda Road in Pelawatte. The luxury car, traveling from Pelawatte to Akuregoda, collided head-on with a motorcycle carrying a mother, father, and their two children, aged two and six.
All four were immediately rushed to the Colombo National Hospital. The mother and both children were later transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for intensive care. Hospital sources say they remain under close medical supervision.
According to police, the vehicle was confirmed to be the official car of the President’s Secretary. At the time of the accident, the Secretary’s wife and their official driver were in the car.
The driver was promptly arrested by the police and produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court. Although released on bail, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 35,000 as compensation to the injured family.
This incident has sparked public outrage over safety concerns surrounding VIP motorcades and the accountability of those operating state-owned vehicles. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision.
