A luxury vehicle registered to President’s Secretary Sanath Kumanayake was involved in a high-speed crash near the Akuregoda Army Camp, leaving a family of four, including two small children hospitalized. The New People’s Front has filed a formal complaint with the CID, alleging misuse of state property, claiming the vehicle was used by Kumanayake’s wife for a private shopping trip. The party is also questioning the conduct of the police and demanding accountability from the highest office.
A formal complaint has been filed with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by New People’s Front Foreign Affairs Secretary Vidura Algama and New People’s Elders’ Association Chairman Sunil Kumara, demanding a full investigation into the misuse of the President’s Secretary’s official vehicle.
The controversy centers around a serious accident that occurred near the Akuregoda Army Camp in Pelawatta, where a luxury vehicle belonging to President’s Secretary Sanath Kumanayake collided with a motorcycle, critically injuring a mother, father, and two children aged 2 and 6. The victims are currently receiving treatment at Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo.
According to the complaint, Kumanayake’s wife was behind the wheel during what is being described as a private late-night shopping trip. The accident reportedly took place around 9:00 pm. “Why is the official vehicle being used for private errands?” questioned Vidura Algama. “This is a clear abuse of public resources, and it directly contradicts the promises made by the revival government about clean governance.”
The New People’s Front accused state officials and ministers of normalizing the misuse of government assets, undermining public trust. “If private trips are essential, then buy a private car for your wife. Do not misuse state property,” Algama said.
Further criticism was leveled at police conduct. The party questioned how the individual responsible for the accident was released from custody, while victims remained hospitalized. “We suspect the police provided incomplete or misleading information to court. There’s a serious concern about bias in this investigation,” said Algama.
The New People’s Front has demanded that the CID obtain a formal statement from the President’s Secretary and re-arrest the driver, who was allegedly released under questionable circumstances. They emphasized that no one regardless of political or official status should be above the law.
This case adds to growing public frustration over government transparency, accountability, and the ethical use of state-owned resources.
