SupremeSAT – Official Statement
Date: August 8, 2025
Location: Colombo
With the continued spread of various false claims and politically motivated speculation, we wish to make the following clarification to the public.
Over the last 13 years, malicious rumors have been deliberately spread for narrow political objectives with the intention of misleading the public. Therefore, it is our responsibility to present the truth to the nation at this point.
Here are the facts:
- SupremeSAT is not a company owned or affiliated with the Rajapaksa family.
- SupremeSAT-1 was not launched by the Sri Lankan government or with Sri Lankan taxpayer funds.
This project was initiated and operated as a private sector commercial venture through a joint collaboration with China’s state-owned China Great Wall Industry Corporation.
SupremeSAT-1, launched on November 27, 2012, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China, was placed into geostationary orbit at 87.5° East Longitude. This satellite was launched under an agreement signed with China Great Wall Industry Corporation in Beijing in 2011. The satellite was successfully placed in orbit, and SupremeSAT-1 became the first satellite operated with Sri Lankan involvement to enter space.
It was never stated that this was a Sri Lanka-owned satellite. From the outset, it was clearly mentioned that it was a commercial satellite launched in partnership with China. However, political forces intentionally distorted this fact for propaganda, misleading the public.
Despite the challenges and false accusations, SupremeSAT continued to invest in the space sector, developing Sri Lanka’s first space academy and teleport station in Pallekele, Kandy, named the Kandy Teleport, which now serves as a hub for satellite communication services.
Clarification of Current Status
SupremeSAT-1 continues to be in orbit at 87.5° East and is fully functional. All operations related to it are handled through international regulatory and operational standards. The company maintains its presence and services in the commercial space industry.
SupremeSAT has never defaulted on financial responsibilities, and all operations have been carried out transparently and in accordance with Sri Lanka’s laws and the requirements of international space organizations.
It is unfortunate that individuals and political factions with no technical knowledge or experience in the field are attempting to mislead the public with baseless accusations.
As a fully private-sector company, SupremeSAT remains committed to operating within global commercial space standards, contributing to innovation, national progress, and Sri Lanka’s international reputation.
Those who knowingly spread misinformation should understand that truth, when revealed, is the ultimate victory.
We kindly request the public to verify facts from official sources before forming opinions.
