SJB MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera blasts the government for peddling lies about rescuing Sri Lanka’s economy, slams the acting IGP for political grandstanding, and warns of deep cracks in the ruling alliance. He signals that the SJB could form a coalition with progressive elements of the NPP under Sajith Premadasa to take over leadership.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera has accused the current government of pushing “another big lie” that it was solely responsible for pulling Sri Lanka out of its economic crisis. Speaking to the media, Perera said the truth is far different, crediting the previous administration for IMF agreements, boosting foreign reserves, and driving economic growth.
He took aim at the Acting Inspector General of Police, claiming he is acting like a government minister instead of tackling the surge in crime. “The Acting IGP says former ministers are to blame for today’s crimes, but his job is to suppress them. If he cannot stop crime, he should resign. Right now, he lacks both the strength and the capacity to control the situation,” Perera said, warning of a worsening law-and-order breakdown.
Perera argued that the President and government MPs are unfit to govern, lacking the expertise needed to manage the economy or national security. He said their repeated claims of ending corruption, rebuilding the economy, and increasing dollar reserves are fabrications designed to mislead the public.
He also raised concerns over parliamentary credibility, pointing out that when MPs question the Prime Minister, her responses are expected to be factual and based on official sources. However, he noted that the JVP faction within the ruling coalition has publicly contradicted her statements, portraying her as misled and ineffective.
According to Perera, these public disagreements reveal a deeper rift within the government. “The divisions are now out in the open. Even within the National People’s Power (NPP) element of the government, opinions are split,” he said. The SJB, he added, is prepared to join forces with democratic and progressive members of the NPP to form a new government under Sajith Premadasa’s leadership if the ruling alliance collapses.
“The Samagi Jana Balawegaya is ready to take the country forward with democracy-loving groups from within the NPP at any time,” Perera concluded, hinting that the countdown to a major political realignment may already be underway.
