MP Dilith Jayaweera, after visiting former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in prison, said the controversial imprisonment will reshape Sri Lanka’s political future, calling the chain of events a blow to the country’s image.
The imprisonment of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will change the political trajectory of Sri Lanka, MP Dilith Jayaweera declared after visiting him in prison this afternoon (23).
Speaking to the media, Jayaweera compared the government’s actions to a game of cricket, describing Wickremesinghe’s arrest as politically driven. “He went to play cricket, this government is playing cricket. He was hit with the ball and declared out. According to my political reading, this will be an incident that takes our country in a new direction in politics,” he said.
Jayaweera stressed that although he does not support Wickremesinghe’s politics, he rejects the way the events unfolded. “I will never approve of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s politics. But it is wrong for a president of this country to be treated like this. I am not saying that what the court did is right or wrong. What I am saying is that the chain of events leading to this judicial process and investigation does not paint a good picture for the image of our country,” he added.
Jayaweera’s comments highlight the deepening political divisions and growing concerns that the imprisonment of a former president may have far-reaching implications for Sri Lanka’s governance and democratic institutions.
