Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club has demanded action be taken against Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis after he behaved in an unruly manner and smashed part of their dressing room door at a domestic club match on Friday.
Mendis playing for rival team Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) was out for a second-ball duck, caught at slip against a ball from leg spinner Jeffrey Vandersay and unable to come to grips with his dismissal smashed part of the glass door at the Bloomfield pavilion, as his team lost the inter club match by 15 runs.
“We have lodged a strong complaint and protest with SSC and Sri Lanka Cricket and we want them to take action against Kusal Mendis.
“If one of our players had done this at the SSC, all hell would have broken loose,” an official of Bloomfield said.
In a move at damage control the sacked Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka who also plays for SSC and was replaced by Mendis, tendered an apology to the manager of Bloomfield, Ramesh Joseph.
An official of SSC said Mendis’ appalling conduct will be taken up at an emergency meeting, but he stopped short of confirming that the player will be subjected to a ban.
It may not be the first time that Mendis would get away scot-free after a two-year ban imposed on him for violating a team curfew and Covid 19 restrictions on a tour of England in 2021 was lifted after just seven months by lenient officials of Sri Lanka Cricket.
A year earlier Mendis committed what was thought to be a murderous act, when under the influence of alcohol, he allegedly was involved in a crash with a cyclist, who died instantly in Horethuduwa, Panadura, just outside the country’s capital Colombo on the 5th of July 2020. Guests at the wedding claimed that Mendis was seen consuming alcohol prior to driving off in his super luxury SUV.
