Sri Lanka is once again staring at the brink of financial collapse, with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa warning that the country will go bankrupt by 2028 if urgent corrective action is not taken. Speaking in Ampara to local government representatives of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Premadasa said Sri Lanka has failed to maintain the economic growth required to service its $5.5 billion debt.
He revealed that he had proposed discussions with the International Monetary Fund to amend the Extended Fund Facility Agreement, but claimed the government has shown no interest in pursuing such changes.
Premadasa cautioned that without immediate steps to strengthen growth and renegotiate terms, Sri Lanka risks plunging back into bankruptcy within the next three years, repeating the devastating cycle of economic collapse that shattered the nation in 2022.
