A romantic evening turned into a nightmare for a Spanish couple when three local tour guides allegedly sexually assaulted and physically attacked the woman at a Kalpitiya DJ party, leading to their arrest and remand.
Three Sri Lankan tour guides have been arrested and remanded in custody for allegedly sexually assaulting and attacking a 31 year old Spanish woman while she was dancing with her boyfriend at a DJ party in Kalpitiya. The incident occurred on August 30 in the Kudawa area, according to police reports.
The woman and her boyfriend were attending a DJ party at a local hotel in the Kandakuliya area of Kalpitiya when the assault took place. In her official complaint, the victim stated that the party was attended by both foreign tourists and local youths, and everyone was initially enjoying themselves.
She reported that a group of individuals approached her, touched her inappropriately without consent, and physically assaulted her when she resisted their advances. The attack resulted in injuries above her left eye, requiring treatment at a private hospital in Puttalam.
On August 31, the Spanish national filed a formal written complaint with the Kalpitiya Police, identifying three specific suspects involved in the incident. The arrested individuals, aged 23, 34, and 39, are all residents of the Kalpitiya area and work as tour guides.
The Kalpitiya Magistrate’s Court has remanded the three suspects in custody until September 15 pending further investigation into the sexual assault and physical attack charges. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident that has raised concerns about tourist safety in the popular coastal destination.
