Sri Lanka’s drug crisis deepens as a third suspicious container, linked to the massive Middeniya ice drug haul, sits under tight guard at Colombo Port awaiting inspection.
Police sources have revealed that a container suspected of carrying ice drugs or precursor chemicals linked to the two containers unearthed in Middeniya is now under scrutiny at Colombo Port. Authorities confirmed that the container remains in port custody and has not yet been released, with heightened security measures in place since last Thursday.
According to officials, the same police officer who first alerted the Inspector General of Police (IGP) about the two containers discovered in Middeniya in August has once again provided information regarding this container. On Police Day, the officer informed the IGP that the container had yet to be inspected.
Acting on this intelligence, the IGP instructed the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) to investigate the matter further. However, it has been revealed that no proper action was taken by the PNB until the IGP directly questioned a senior officer about the status of the suspicious cargo.
This revelation has intensified concerns over how drug-related consignments manage to slip through high-security ports, with Colombo Port once again under the spotlight. The discovery raises alarming questions about the oversight and accountability within Sri Lanka’s narcotics enforcement operations.
