Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala has thrown down the gauntlet to MP Namal Rajapaksa, vowing to fight the Rs. 1 billion defamation writ in court. Promising a blistering cross-examination on Rajapaksa’s qualifications and family ties to past controversies, Watagala insists he is ready for a legal showdown that could expose more than expected.
Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala says he is fully prepared to face the writ filed by Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who is seeking Rs. 1 billion in compensation for alleged defamation. Speaking in Parliament, Watagala said he has not yet received formal notice, but stressed that Rajapaksa must file the case within 14 days in line with the writ process.
He welcomed the opportunity to be cross-examined in court. “Since he has not acted as a lawyer in court, he may not be aware of this. The only case in which the plaintiff can be questioned on matters beyond the scope of the case is defamation cases,” Watagala told the House.
The Deputy Minister said his questions will directly challenge the character and credibility of the plaintiff. “Then I question whether you have the qualifications required to enter law school. Are your qualifications from a UK university genuine? Were you able to obtain the relevant qualifications by appearing for the final year law school examination in a separate room? Are you and your family involved in various high-profile deaths such as Thajudeen, Lasantha Wickramatunga and Pradeep Eknaligoda? Is Julampitiya Amare your bodyguard? Did your father protect Nimal Lanza when the Special Task Force came looking for him? I will question these in court,” Watagala declared.
He also issued a warning, stating that if Rajapaksa fails to proceed with the writ, he will file a cross-appeal and seek compensation himself.
The defamation row stems from Rajapaksa’s claim that his reputation was tarnished by remarks Watagala made at a recent media conference in Homagama. With both sides unwilling to back down, the stage is set for a high-profile legal battle that could have serious political and personal ramifications.
