Venerable Vedaruwe Upali Thero of the Asgiri Chapter has sounded a grave warning, claiming that a wider conspiracy is at play to destabilize Buddhist nations, using Nepal’s deadly unrest as a prime example. He urged global religious leaders to unite against the forces sowing division and destruction.
Venerable Vedaruwe Upali Thero, the Anunayake of the Asgiri Chapter and Incumbent of the Polonnaruwa Sixteenth Chapter, issued a strongly worded statement linking the recent violent uprising in Nepal to a larger conspiratorial plan aimed at dismantling Buddhist nations and their cultural heritage.
“We are deeply shocked by the series of extremely sad events that have taken place in Nepal,” the Thero said, emphasizing that the unrest in the birthplace of the Buddha should not be dismissed as a mere internal matter. He described the violence as evidence of a carefully orchestrated attempt to destroy South Asian nations with deep Buddhist traditions.
According to the Thero, the rebellion in Nepal reflects a dangerous ignorance among sections of the youth who spearheaded the unrest. “It is not a tragedy, it is clear that the young people who took the lead in the rebellion to destroy Nepal are a group that does not know the beginning or the history of their country,” he noted.
The Venerable stressed that Nepal, a country with a proud legacy of great kings and Buddhist culture, now faces devastation due to this misguided movement. He warned that Nepal’s youth would eventually realize the damage they have inflicted on their own nation and its property.
Highlighting the brutal turn of events, he said the uprising had not only caused loss of life but also tarnished the honor of a country with an ancient and revered history. “It is clear that someone has been behind this group of young people,” the Thero remarked, adding that the unrest represents more than local dissatisfaction — it is part of a broader destabilization agenda.
He cautioned that if rebellion replaces governance, democracy and humanity themselves could be wiped away. “Moreover, if a situation arises where rulers rule the country instead of the rulers, the day will not be far when democracy and humanity will be wiped out from this earth,” he warned.
Calling for a united spiritual response, Venerable Upali Thero urged global religious leaders to act swiftly. “All the religious leaders of the world must come forward today to extinguish the burning world,” he appealed.
For Sri Lankans, who share strong cultural and religious ties with Nepal, the crisis is a reminder of how fragile peace can be when exploited by divisive forces.
