(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan Government is to reopen three diplomatic missions some three years after it was forced to shut them down owing to the country’s economic meltdown during that period, officials said on Tuesday.
The embassies will be reopened in Germany (Frankfurt), Cyprus (Nicosia) and in Iraq (Baghdad) that were closed in 2021 and 2022, they said.
The Missions were closed as part of a general restructuring process which was aimed at conserving the country’s foreign reserves and minimising expenditure related to maintenance.
The island-nation declared bankruptcy after it fell back on international loan repayments in 2021.
The country is gradually regaining economic stability with a 2.5 billion hand out from the IMF and by netting in local tax dodgers.
