Sri Lanka’s young allrounder Dunith Wellalage, who rushed home after his father’s sudden death, will rejoin the national squad tomorrow in the UAE, just in time for the Super Four clash against Bangladesh.
Sri Lankan allrounder Dunith Wellalage, who had to abruptly return home following the death of his father, Suranga Wellalage, is set to rejoin the national team tomorrow (20).
Wellalage, 22, flew back to the island early this morning accompanied by Sri Lanka Cricket Team Manager Mahinda Halangoda to pay his last respects. Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed in a statement that the young cricketer will leave for the United Arab Emirates tonight (19) and rejoin the squad immediately.
The timing is emotionally challenging, as Sri Lanka is scheduled to face Bangladesh tomorrow in a decisive Super Four clash of the Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament. This game could play a pivotal role in determining the team’s path to the finals.
Wellalage’s return highlights his resilience and commitment to the national side, despite the personal tragedy he faces. Having impressed earlier in his international career with key spells against India, he remains one of Sri Lanka’s most promising allrounders.
The team, while rallying around their teammate in his grief, will also count on his all-round capabilities as they take on Bangladesh under high stakes.
