Tilvin Silva dismissed claims that President Anura Dissanayake endorsed reckless borrowing, stressing that loans are not a crime but misuse of them is the real issue.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva has strongly refuted claims that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake ever endorsed reckless borrowing, insisting that his stance on loans has been repeatedly misrepresented. Speaking during a Rupavahini program, Silva reminded the public that when Anura Dissanayake was in the opposition, he openly stated that taking loans was not a crime in itself. According to Silva, what Dissanayake described as a crime was the misuse and mismanagement of borrowed funds rather than the act of borrowing.
Silva further emphasized that every nation in the world borrows to fund development and that loans, when used responsibly, are an accepted part of global economic practice. He clarified that President Dissanayake never suggested that “even a moneylender can take loans and develop,” dismissing such interpretations as distortions pushed by political opponents.
The JVP General Secretary argued that the real debate lies in how loans are applied: whether they are invested in productive infrastructure and social welfare or squandered on corruption and short-term political gains. He insisted that Sri Lanka’s current administration is committed to ensuring that future borrowings serve national interest and deliver tangible benefits to the people.
His remarks come amid heightened scrutiny over Sri Lanka’s debt crisis and economic recovery efforts. By reinforcing the government’s position, Silva sought to assure citizens that while borrowing may continue, misuse of loans will not be tolerated under Anura Dissanayake’s leadership.
